I have engaged in art and design all my life as an essential balance to the other aspects of living but it was not until 2000 that I made the decision to formally study. I completed a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2004 at National Art School, a Master of Contemporary Art for Educators in 2005 at Sydney College of the Arts and this year will complete a Master of Design with the College of Fine Art.
In looking at Art and Design it seemed to me that in contemporary culture Art is the external, creative expression of 'self' in through visual, audio, digital or physical means. The expression of personal experience, political, social or world views, personal perceptions and judgement. Design is the perception of another's self and the interpretation of how 'the other' may see their personal experience, political, social or world view, perceptions and judgement.
In essence, it seems as though Art is made for 'self' and Design for 'the other' but where these fuse and evolve into an entirely separate 'entity' is in community-based art. Individuals in collaboration with others create an outcome that expresses a unique, third 'collective identity' that is both intrinsically part of and yet separate to, the people who created it. This is the place where as an artist and designer, 'to create' finds greater depth of meaning
